1. Introduction
Fouled Anchor Safety LLC, operating as Punchline Foundry ("we," "us," "our"), is committed to protecting your privacy. This Privacy Policy explains how our comedy applications — Jokesmith, Gigsmith, and Riffsmith (collectively, the "Apps") — collect, use, disclose, and handle your personal information.
2. Information We Collect
2.1 Information You Provide Directly
- No Accounts: None of our apps require an account. There is no username, email address, or password to create, and we operate no user database. Purchases are handled entirely by Apple.
- Comedy Data: Jokes, setlists, performance recordings, analytics data, venue information, gig bookings, contacts, and financial records you create within the apps
- Scene Content (Riffsmith): The lines you speak or type during a practice scene, plus the coaching scores and scene history generated from them
- Veteran Status (Optional): For veteran discount verification (honor-system based)
- Communication Data: Messages you send through support or feedback features
2.2 Information Collected Automatically
- No third-party analytics: None of our comedy apps include a third-party analytics SDK, and none of them track you across other apps or websites. Diagnostic events stay in a local log on your device, where they can help you describe a problem if you contact support.
- Audio Data (Jokesmith): Performance recordings are processed on-device for laugh detection. Audio data stays on your device and is NOT transmitted to our servers
- Voice Input (Riffsmith): Speech is transcribed on your device using Apple’s on-device speech recognition, which we require explicitly rather than allowing server-based transcription. Riffsmith does not record or save audio — only the resulting text enters the scene.
- Location Data (Gigsmith): GPS location only when you explicitly enable Night Watch safety features or venue check-in
2.3 CloudKit Synchronization
When you enable cloud synchronization, your app data is stored on Apple's iCloud servers through CloudKit. This includes jokes, setlists, gig records, venue data, contacts, Riffsmith scene history and skill progress, and user preferences. CloudKit stores this in your own private iCloud database, which we cannot read.
2.4 Optional AI Writing Feedback (Jokesmith)
Jokesmith’s Punch-Up Notes is optional and runs only when you request feedback on a specific joke. Nothing is sent unless you ask for it.
- What is sent: the selected joke’s title, setup, punchline, and your notes — that joke only, not your library.
- Who receives it: OpenAI, by way of a proxy server we operate. The proxy retains only a hashed app identifier and a request count for quota enforcement — not your submitted joke text.
- How it is used: solely to generate the writing feedback you asked for.
- Verification data: Apple-signed app and purchase proofs are sent to the proxy for app verification, entitlement checks, and quota enforcement.
Jokesmith’s other intelligence stays on your device: StageIntel predictions are computed locally from your own performance history, and laugh detection runs on-device through Apple’s SoundAnalysis framework. Your performance recordings are never uploaded.
2.5 Cloud AI Processing (Riffsmith)
Riffsmith uses third-party cloud AI to generate scene-partner replies and coaching. We ask for your explicit permission before any scene content leaves your device.
Consent comes first
Before your first interactive scene, Riffsmith shows an AI Data Sharing screen describing exactly what is sent, who receives it, and how it is used. You then choose either Allow Cloud AI and Try a Scene or Continue Without Cloud AI. Declining keeps local scripted practice and supported on-device features fully available. Existing users updating from an earlier version see the same disclosure once before any cloud processing can resume.
This permission is enforced at the network layer, not only in the interface. Until you explicitly allow cloud AI, the app does not construct or send Anthropic requests, premium voice requests, queued coaching requests, or weekly-report requests. Revoking permission restores that block immediately.
What is sent
- Scene text — your lines and your partner’s, including speech after Apple’s on-device recognition has converted it to text
- Scene setup and preferences — the skill, mode, persona, and settings for the scene
- Coaching context — scores and short notes from earlier scenes, so feedback reflects your progress
Microphone audio is never sent to Anthropic or Inworld. Speech is transcribed on your device using Apple’s on-device speech recognition, which Riffsmith requires explicitly rather than allowing server-based transcription. No audio recording is created, stored, or transmitted.
Who receives it
- Anthropic, PBC — receives scene and coaching text through our secure proxy to generate replies, coaching, and weekly reports. Anthropic processes this text to return a response and does not use it to train their models.
- Render Services, Inc. — hosts the proxy server that relays requests between the app and Anthropic.
- Inworld AI — receives generated partner dialogue only when Premium Voice is enabled, solely to synthesize spoken audio. It never receives your own speech or lines.
- Apple — provides CloudKit sync and processes App Store purchases.
How it is used
Solely to generate scene-partner replies, coaching feedback, weekly progress reports, and the optional spoken partner voice. Riffsmith does not use this information for advertising, tracking, profiling, or sale.
Our proxy does not log the content of your scenes. It records only operational metadata — which model was used, subscription tier, and response size — for reliability and abuse prevention. Because the apps have no accounts, no name, email address, or device identifier is attached to these requests.
Your controls
You can review or revoke this permission at any time at Settings → Privacy → AI Data Sharing → Review AI Data Sharing. Riffsmith also offers modes that require no network access at all: Off uses a scripted library bundled in the app, and On-Device runs scene assistance through Apple Intelligence on eligible hardware. In both, nothing leaves your device.
3. How We Use Your Information
- Providing Services: Delivering app functionality, comedy analytics, gig management, and performance tracking
- CloudKit Sync: Synchronizing your data across your Apple devices
- ML Processing (Jokesmith): On-device machine learning for laugh detection and performance predictions. This processing happens locally on your device
- Cloud AI Processing (Riffsmith): Generating scene-partner replies, coaching feedback, weekly progress reports, and the optional spoken partner voice. This occurs only after you have granted AI Data Sharing permission, and is never used for advertising, tracking, or profiling. See section 2.4.
- Communications: Responding to support inquiries and sending critical app updates
- Analytics & Improvement: Understanding how you use our apps to improve features (anonymized data only)
4. Data Sharing and Disclosure
We do not sell your data, and we never share your comedy material for advertising. Your performance recordings, gig data, and contacts are not disclosed to third parties except as described below or as required by law.
We share limited data with a small number of service providers, only as necessary to deliver the features you use:
- Apple Inc. — CloudKit synchronization and App Store purchase processing.
- Anthropic, PBC — Riffsmith scene and coaching text, only after you have allowed cloud AI.
- Render Services, Inc. — hosting for the proxy server that relays Riffsmith AI requests.
- Inworld AI — Riffsmith Premium Voice synthesis, only when that voice is enabled, and only for AI-generated partner dialogue.
- OpenAI — a single joke’s text when you request Jokesmith Punch-Up Notes, relayed through our proxy. Never your library, recordings, or performance data.
Service provider obligations. We require every service provider that handles data on our behalf to provide the same or equal protection of user data as stated in this Privacy Policy and as required by Apple’s Developer Program License Agreement. These providers may use the data only to perform the service we have engaged them for, and may not use it for their own purposes, for advertising, or to build user profiles.
5. Data Retention
- Your content (jokes, sets, recordings, gigs, contacts, Riffsmith scene history and skill progress) is retained on your device, and in your own private iCloud if sync is enabled, until you delete it. You control this directly and can delete any item at any time.
- Riffsmith scene text sent for cloud processing is retained by Anthropic only as long as needed to return a response and meet their own abuse-prevention obligations. We do not retain scene content on our proxy.
- Premium Voice audio is synthesized, streamed to your device, played, and discarded. It is not stored by us or by Inworld for later use.
- Proxy operational metadata (model used, tier, response size) is retained in short-lived server logs for reliability and abuse prevention, and contains no scene content and no identifier tied to you.
- Jokesmith Punch-Up Notes joke text is retained by OpenAI only as long as needed to return your feedback and meet their own abuse-prevention obligations. Our proxy retains a hashed app identifier and request count for quota enforcement, and does not retain the joke text.
- Support correspondence is retained only as long as needed to resolve your inquiry.
Deleting the app removes local data from that device. If you used iCloud sync, delete the app’s data in your iCloud settings to remove the synced copy.
6. Data Security
We implement comprehensive security measures including TLS/SSL encryption, CloudKit encryption at rest, and iOS security features. Performance recordings processed by Jokesmith's ML features remain on your device.
7. Your Privacy Rights
You can access and modify your information within the app or by contacting support@fouledanchorsafety.com. You may request deletion of your account within 30 days. California (CCPA) and EU (GDPR) residents have additional rights.
8. Apple Privacy & Permissions
- Microphone (Jokesmith): To record live performances for laugh detection analysis
- Location (Gigsmith): For Night Watch safety check-ins and venue mapping
- Contacts (Gigsmith): Optional import of industry contacts
- Calendar (Gigsmith): Optional calendar integration for gig scheduling
- Microphone & Speech Recognition (Riffsmith): To hear your lines during a scene. Transcription is forced on-device; no audio is recorded, saved, or uploaded
- Internet (Riffsmith): For cloud AI scenes, coaching, and the premium scene-partner voice — used only after you grant AI Data Sharing permission, and revocable at Settings → Privacy → AI Data Sharing. Off and On-Device modes require no network access
We do not track users across other apps or websites for advertising purposes.
